Incompetent manicure

I'm not very good at painting my nails. I like having them painted but I hate how quickly they chip. I've only had a professional manicure once - at Wah Nails in Topshop, Oxford Street. It was amazing! So smooth and perfect, and it lasted over two weeks.

I thought I would give this lovely nail tutorial from the Dainty Squid a go, she makes it look so easy!

I meant to make a little tutorial but the whole thing was a disaster. It took over two hours for the various layers to fully dry, during which time I managed to repeatedly smudge my nails, and stick them together with the tape. Also instead of scotch tape, I bought "invisible tape" - NOT the same thing!
Even will all the smudging disasters, I don't think they look too awful (I am still waiting for someone to notice them however!)
My tips if you want to try this would be:
♥ Only use one layer of each colour and one of topcoat or it will never dry!
Make sure you use scotch tape, any other kind is too sticky and will ruin design!
Do not drink while you do this because a bathroom break will cause chaos!

So what do you think? Is nail art worth the faff?

I really like your diagonals :) I never would have guessed I'd get into nail varnish but I love co-ordinating colours with what I am wearing and doing my nails while watching a film gives me something to occupy my hands :)

its wonderful! I once gave myself such a manicure (diagonal two colors etc etc) and I was excited! But don't worry, you are not the only one who is not very good at painting nails, everytime I attempt to do that, my friends make fun of me :P

That looks so cool <3
I'm fairly confident I'd cock it up if I tried, co-ordination is not a strong point of mine ha ha

I find masking tape to be the best 'template' to use. You can cut it into all sorts of shapes.
When I was younger I loved painting my nails and doing nail art. I wore nail polish so much and that often my nails actually turned yellow because there wasn't enough oxygen getting to the nails, so it kinda put me off doing it for a few years.
But I started repainting them again earlier this year and I'm going to do some xmassy style ones this week.
Whether its worth the faff, I'm not sure but it does let me be create for a lil while. Oh and a little tip; if you paint onto your fingers don't worry, once the nails are dry dip your hands in warm soapy water - it'll come right off!
